동남아에서의 외부의 영향과 현지화에 대한 학제간 연구를 목적으로 조직된 이 클러스터에는 국내외 동남아시아 연구자 16명이 참여했다. 이들은 박사명, 조흥국, 유인선, 김형준, 강희정, 김은영, 김지훈, 송승원, 이상국, 앤드류 존슨 (Andrew A. Johnson), 재클린 아퀴노 시아프노 (Jacqueline Aquino Siapno), 이한우 교수 등 한국에 기반을 둔 연구자와 제프리 웨이드 (Geoffrey Wade), 준꼬 고이즈미 (Junko Koizumi), 뜨옹 부 (Tuong H. Vu), 폴 크라토스카(Paul H. Kratoska) 등 외국의 연구자들이다. 이 클러스터는 기존에 동남아시아의 역사와 문화를 인도나 중국, 서구의 문명의 영역에 가려진 소전통이라 보는 시각을 수정하고, 동남아시아를 구성하고 있는 요소들의 본질적인 모습을 탐구하기 위해노력했다. 이를 이해 클러스터 연구자들은 동남아시아의 중국, 인도, 아랍, 서양, 한국 등 다양한 외부의 영향이 어떻게 동남아시아의 고전, 근대, 현대 시기에 다양하게 지역의 정치, 경제, 사회상에 영향을 미쳐왔으며, 동남아 사회가 이 외부의 영향을 어떻게 내부적 역동성으로 동남아화해 왔는지를 규명했다. 1년에 걸친 클러스터의 연구는 2011년 3월 24-25일 양일에 걸쳐 서강대학교 가브리엘 관에서 열린 클러스터 국제학술회의에서 발표되었다. 발표된 논문은 각각 국문과 영문으로 책으로 엮어져 2011년 내에 출판될 예정이다.
