Problematising Megaliths of Southeast Asia and Pacific

This Research Cluster Conference brings together scholars working in Southeast Asia and the Pacific to take stock of the state of megalithic research. With an aim to move beyond out-dated and simplistic culture historical interpretations of megalithic cultures, and irrational and non-substantive interpretations of the monuments themselves, the conference will act as a forum for in-depth discussions to move towards a comprehensive reappraisal of these enigmatic monuments in terms of their possible past meanings, their ethno-historical settings, current archaeological, anthropological and socio-political studies, and their often contested futures as distinctive items of cultural heritage. It is planned that the papers will be a mix of site specific and/or regionally focused reviews (Borneo, Sulawesi, Laos, etc), as well as more wide ranging historical reviews of research trends and prospects in archaeology, anthropology and heritage studies.
