Graduate Schools Regulations

I. General Regulations

1.(Objectives) The objectives of the Graduate Schools of Sogang University (hereafter referred to as the Graduate School) shall be to pursue in greater depth the purpose of university education as defined in Article 1 of the Sogang University Regulations by cultivating a high degree of proficiency and creativity in pursuing truth and scholarly research.

2.(Establishment) The Graduate Schools of Sogang University have three divisions of separate Graduate Schools: 1) Graduate School; 2) Graduate School of Theology, Graduate School of International Studies, Graduate School of Media Communications and Graduate School of Business (hereafter referred to as Professional Graduate Schools); 3) Graduate School of Public Policy, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Economics, Graduate School of Mass Communication, and Graduate School of Information and Technology (hereafter referred to as Special Graduate Schools)

3.(Programs) Programs for each Graduate School are as follows:
① Graduate School: offers Master's, Doctoral, and Combined program.
② Professional Schools: offer Master's, Doctoral, and Combined program.
③ Special Graduate Schools: offer Master's program.
④ Joint programs among all Graduate Schools, along with other cooperative institutions are offered by both the Graduate School and Professional Graduate Schools.

4. (DepartmentsㆍMajorsㆍStudent Entrance Quota)
① The departments, majors, and student entrance quota for each Graduate School are found in Appendix 1.
② The following are the exceptions that are not affected by the student entrance quota stated in the clause mentioned above.
1) Candidates entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
2) Foreign candidates whose parents are foreigners.
3) Foreign candidates and overseas Korean candidates who have completed their education equivalent to primary, secondary, and undergraduate schools in Korea.

5.(Classes) The Graduate School and the Professional Graduate Schools offer daytime classes whereas the Special Graduate Schools offer classes in the night time. In special cases, the schedule may be altered with the Dean’s consent.

II. Residency and Maximum Length for Degree Work

6.(Course Work Period)
① The course work for Master's and Doctoral programs take two years each, and four years for the Combined program. However, the course work for Master’s in Graduate School for Media Communications, Master's and Doctoral degrees from Graduate School of Theology and Graduate School of Business, and Master's program in Special Graduate Schools take two and a half years.
② The Course Work refers to the minimum requirement for degree work.
③ The Course Work can be shortened in accordance with related regulations. For details, refer to the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

7.(Duration of Program)
① The maximum period allowed for a Master’s degree is three years, five years for a Doctoral program, and eight years for the Combined program. However, a period of four years is allowed for a Master's degree from the Graduate School of Theology, Special Graduate Schools, Graduate School of Media Communications, and the evening program at the Graduate School of Business.
② The duration refers to the total period of enrollment permitted for finishing each program.
③ The extensions will be considered according to the respective Graduate School’s Minor Regulations.

III. Admission, Transfer, Readmittance

8.(Admission period) Admission is finalized within two weeks from the beginning of each semester.

9. (Requirements for Admission)
① Those who are in one of the following categories and have passed the screening processes shall be admitted to the Graduate Schools.
1) Those who have a Bachelor's degree or who are approved by the Minister of Education as having the equivalent qualifications based upon Korea's Education Law are eligible to be admitted for Master's and Combined program.
2) Those who have a Master's degree or who are approved by the Minister of Education as having the equivalent qualifications based upon Korea's Education Law shall be admitted for Doctoral program.
3) Full-time faculty members of the University may not be admitted.

10. (Entrance Application and Screening)
① Applicants must submit all the required documents.
② The admissions process of the Graduate Schools consist of document screening, written examination, and interview.
③ The details of the admissions process are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

11.(Transferal Admission) Those who have graduated from or are attending other graduate schools may transfer to the Graduate Schools with the approval of the president. The eligibility to transfer, the procedure, and policy on approved credits earned in the previous graduate school are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

12.(Re-admittance)
① Those who have voluntarily withdrawn or have been expelled from the Graduate Schools and seek re-admittance may be permitted to return the school if there are vacancies. However, those who exceeded the maximum length of the study period, received academic warning, or were expelled for disciplinary reasons are not permitted.
② Re-admittance is allowed only once. The eligibility for re-admittance, its procedure, and the approved credits earned in the past registrations shall be provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.
③ Those who completed Doctoral course work but were expelled from exceeding the maximum length to submit a dissertation may be permitted to return to the school by the decision of the Graduate School Committee and with the approval of the president. Similarly, re-admittance is allowed only once.

IV. Registration, Temporary Leave, Returning to School, Permanent Withdrawal, Dismissal, and Completion

13.(Registration) Students should complete their registration according to the determined procedures during the designated period at the beginning of each semester.

14.(Refund of Tuition and fees)
① For students who are on temporary leave due to military service, the already paid tuition and fees will carry forward to their next registration term.
② For students who are registered and are on temporary leave due to their own reasons or withdrawn from the school permanently, the already paid tuition and fees shall be refunded or be carried forward to the next registration term. The details are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

15.(Temporary Leave)
① If a student is absent from classes for a period of more than one month on account of illness, military service, or any other unavoidable circumstances, he/she must submit an application form and obtain permission for temporary leave from the Dean of the graduate school he/she belongs to. For Master's program, the total time of temporary leave shall not exceed two semesters, except that of Graduate School of Education and Graduate School of Mass Communications which allow three semesters. For Doctoral programs, the total time of temporary leave shall not exceed four semesters, and six semesters for Combined program. Only, military service endorsed by documentary evidence will be exempt from the total time of temporary leave.
② For long term leave due to business trips or overseas assignments for students of the Professional Graduate Schools and the Special Graduate Schools, refer to the details provided in each Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

16.(Returning to School) Returning to school will be permitted only during the registration period at the beginning of each semester.

17.(Dismissal, Permanent Withdrawal)
① Those who fall under any of the following categories shall be dismissed.
1) Those who have failed to secure their degree at the end of the period stipulated in Article 7.
2) Those who have failed to register within the period allowed after the termination of temporary leave stipulated in Article 15.
3) Those who failed to register within the period of registration in each semester.
4) Those whose GPA is less than what is allowed by each Graduate School.
② Those who wish to withdraw permanently from the Graduate Schools shall follow the required procedures.

18.(Completion) To graduate, students should complete the required duration for each program, and their required credits.

V. Transfer and Change of the Major Field

19.Transfer between departments and change of one’s major shall be provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

VI. Courses and Credits

20.(Courses) Courses offered by the Graduate Schools are outlined in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

21.(Course Plan) After entering each course, a student should make a course plan under the guidance of each department chairman or head professor in his/her major field.

22.(Required Credits) The minimum number of credits required for Master's program, Doctoral program and Combined program in the respective Graduate School is explained in Appendix 2.

23. (Major Minor) A student may be allowed to have a minor according to the regulations provided by the respective Graduate School.

24.(Credits in a Semester) The maximum number of credits allowed for registeration each semester is 12 for Graduate School, 15 for Professional Graduate Schools(12 for Graduate School of Media Communications), and 6 for Special Graduate Schools(10 for Graduate School of Business). To register credits beyond the allowed maximum, refer to the details provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

25. (Approval of Credits) Credits earned at other graduate schools in Korea or abroad are validated according school regulations. Refer to the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations for details.

26.(Transfer of Credits) Courses and credits taken at other graduate schools with joint programs may be accepted and transferred. The details are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

27.(Successive Undergraduate to Master’s degree program) Bachelor’s degree program and the Graduate School program can be continuously pursued according to school regulations. Refer to the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations for details.

27.-2. (Courses for both Undergraduate and Master’s degree program)
① Courses for both undergraduate and Master’s degree program of Graduate School may be attended by undergraduate students who have completed their sixth semester with a CGPA of 3.0 or above.
② In the above case, student will be credited a maximum of 9 credits for courses taken as an undergraduate towards their graduate degrees.

VII. Grades and Grade Points

28.(Grades)
① Grades and grade points shall be as follows:

② In case a grade is not determined by the deadline for grade submission, an Incomplete, or "I" will be assigned. Then, the finalized grade in writing should be submitted to the school within 30 days after the deadline.
③ Other evaluations apart from the grades are explained in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

29.(Attendance at Lectures) Students are expected to attend all classes for which they have registered. If a student is absent from class beyond the maximum number of times allowed for each course (less than 1/4 of total class hours for Graduate School and Professional Graduate Schools, less than 1/3 of total class hours for Special Graduate Schools), he/she will earn no credit for the course.

30.(Grade Points) Quality points of 2.0 or above for a course shall denote a passing grade. In order to graduate, however, students must attain a cumulative CGPA of 3.0 or more.

31.(Re-registration) Student who wishes to improve his/her CGPA may be allowed to re-register for the already registered and completed course.

VIII. Qualification Examination

32. (Classification) The right to submit a thesis for each degree is granted after the passing of two examinations: foreign language examination and comprehensive examination.

33.(Foreign Language Examination) Details on the execution of foreign language examination and its procedure are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

34.(Comprehensive Examination) Details on the execution of Comprehensive Examination and its procedure are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

IX. Thesis

35.(Submission of written permission of thesis) Students must submit a written permission to submit the thesis after they have passed the comprehensive examination.

36.(Thesis Submission)

① Period for thesis completion for Master's and Doctoral program is outlined in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.
② The candidates for degrees must submit their thesis to the Dean of their Graduate School three months for Master's degree and for the Doctoral or Combined degree four months prior to the day of the conferring of the degree. Thesis fees will be charged to the candidates when they submit their thesis.

37.(Thesis Committee)
① The reading of the thesis shall be done by the Thesis Committee. The members of the Committee are appointed among the faculty members of the major field or a related field or other qualified persons in the field.
② The Committee shall consist of three members for the Master's degree and five members for the Doctoral degree.
③ A decision to pass the thesis must have the agreement of at least two members for the Master's degree and at least four members for the Doctoral degree.

38.(Report of Thesis Result) The chair of the Committee must report the decision of the Committee to the Dean of the respective Graduate School. The time allowed for the reading of the thesis can be extended under special circumstances with the consent of the Dean of the respective Graduate School.

X. Conferment of Degree

39. (Conferment of Degree)
① The degree shall be conferred upon the candidate who has met the residency requirements, obtained the required credits, passed the required examinations and submitted his/her approved thesis.
② A joint degree or dual degree with foreign universities will be conferred in compliance with related regulations.

40.(Necessary Conditions for Degree) The necessary conditions for degree in the respective Graduate School are provided in Appendix 4.

41.(Diploma Format)
① Format of the diploma for Master's Degree shall be according to the attached form (1).
② Format for the diploma for Doctoral Degree shall be according to the attached form (2).

42.(Cancellation of Conferred Degree) If a student who was awarded a degree has acted dishonorably or if it is revealed that a student during his enrollment period has behaved in a manner which is contrary to the position as a student, the President may cancel the conferment of the degree.

XI. The Honorary Doctoral Degree
43.(Conditions) The Honorary Doctoral Degree may be awarded to a person who has made a distinguished and meritorious contribution to the development of the science and culture of Korea, as well as to the advancement of the culture of all mankind.

44.(Procedures) The President of the University shall confer the honorary degree with the agreement of the Graduate School Committee and the consent of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

45.(Kind of Honorary Doctoral Degree) The kind of Honorary Doctoral Degree shall follow the classification in Article 39 according to the merits and contributions of the awardees.

XII. Public Lectures, Research Students
46. (Public Lectures)
① Public lectures may be given in the respective Graduate School. Public lectures are given to cultivate persons who wish to learn needed knowledge or skills for their professions and personal education, and these lectures do not affect the regular classes in the respective Graduate School.
② The courses offered, duration, student quota, places, and other details shall be provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

47.(Research Students)
① College graduates or those with an equivalent background who wish to audit graduate lectures may be given permission after a prescribed screening.
② Auditors must pay the audit fee and shall not be allowed to take courses for credit.
③ A Certificate of Research may be issued to auditors who achieve qualified research successfully.

XIII. Awards and Penalties
48.(Scholarships, Subsidy for Research) Scholarships and subsidy for research may be awarded to students with excellent scholastic standing and conduct.

49.(Reduction of Registration Fee) Those who have completed the graduate course requirements in addition to fulfilling the residency requirement may thereafter be partially exempted from the tuition and fees.

50.(Rewards and Official Reprimand)
① On the recommendation of the Dean of the respective Graduate School, the President may reward students for their excellent scholastic standing and conduct or their exemplary behavior.
② The President may take disciplinary actions against students who violate their student responsibilities. The details are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

XIV. Student Activities

51.(Student Council)
① Student council can be established as a students' self- government body in the respective Graduate School.
② The relevant contents regarding administration and regulations for the council are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

XV. The Graduate School Committee
52.(Establishment) The Graduate School shall have a Graduate School Committee.

53. (Organization) The Committee shall be composed of seven or more full-time faculty members appointed by the President. The Chair of the Committee shall be the Dean of the Graduate School.

54.(Term of Membership) The term of membership on the Committee shall be two years and is renewable. The term of membership of those who are appointed to fill a vacancy shall be for the remaining term of their predecessor.

55.(Functions) The Committee shall review the following matters:
1) Admission, completion, and conferment.
2) Establishment and abolition of departments, majors, and student entrance quota.
3) Curriculum.
4) Rules and regulations of the Graduate School and its Committee, enforcement, alterations and abolition of established rules.
5) Other matters concerning the administration of the Graduate School.

56. (Operation Committee) Professional Graduate Schools and Special Graduate Schools may have Operation Committee, the details of which are provided in the respective Graduate School's Minor Regulations.

57.(Department Committee) Each Department in the Graduate Schools may have an Operational Committee.

XVI. Revision of Regulation

58.The procedure of the revision of regulation is as follows:
1) The Graduate School Committee shall discuss and decide to revise the Graduate Schools Regulation when it is needed, and the President shall make the final decision.
2) The revised regulation shall be reported to the Board of Directors and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

XVII. Other

59.All regulations of Sogang University are applicable to the graduate students unless specified by the regulations of the Graduate Schools.

60.Detailed regulations for carrying out these regulations shall be determined separately by the President.
